Laminate Flooring

Trouble free flooring with great style

Modern laminates are beautiful, durable, water-resistant and come in a wide range of styles, textures and shades that look like hardwood, tile and stone. This attractive and affordable flooring is formed using a pressurized, heat process, making it tough and scratch resistant, and able to withstand wear and tear. Our top laminate suppliers are: Revwood by Mohawk, Richmond, Torlys, Twelve Oaks and Goodfellow.

What is laminate flooring? The wood look, for less!

Laminate floor layers have enhanced durability and strength because they are fused together. The top layer features a photographic applique under a clear protective coating. The inner layer is usually composed of melamine resin and fiber board. The tongue-and-groove locking system and sturdy top layers make it a trouble-free material that’s resilient to pet claws, hard shoes and rough and tumble activities.

What are the benefits of laminate flooring?

Modern laminate gives the appearance of many wood species like pine, maple, cherry and oak, but at a lower cost. A range of finishes – from high-gloss or embossed to distressed, wire brush, hand scraped, heritage grade and whitewashed, add a rich touch to any decor. In addition to exceptional durability, easy installation and low maintenance, its very affordable and ideal for busy families or businesses. A quick sweep and wipe, and floors are sparkling clean. Some brands even contain antimicrobial resin, which helps keep illnesses and allergies away and the underlay protects the floor from moisture and prevents mold. For the do-it-yourselfer, it’s a very forgiving product that requires less skill to install than more traditional surfaces.

Where are the best places to use hardwood flooring?

It’s tough. It’s durable. And, its perfect for any high traffic, moisture prone area, although its wide range of styles, textures and colour make it a perfect decorative complement for any residential or professional space. It is water resistant and, in some brands, it is even waterproof which means it can be installed in rooms where you typically would not put hardwood, like the kitchen and bathroom or flood prone basements.

Installation is easier than ever

Many homeowners are opting to install their own laminate flooring. Laminate planks are designed to click lock, which makes installation quick and easy. They can also be installed over most existing floors, whether it’s tile, concrete or a wood subfloor. You might also opt for glue-down laminate flooring.

Laminate Floor Construction

Laminate flooring consists of components that are bonded together:
  1. A transparent, protective wear layer that is extremely durable and resistant to stains, fading, burns and abrasive wear
  2. The decorative layer provides a high definition, highly detailed image complete with texture, grain and edge details
  3. A high-density fiberboard core (or HDF) offers impact resistance, stability and long-lasting durability.
  4. A layer comprised of melamine resin as balancing backing is bonded to the underside of the core

There are different methods of installation. The nail/staple down method is commonly used on solid hardwood and engineered wood, when installed over plywood. Full spread glue down and glue assist is used for wider boards. For more information, check out our resource guide.

Solid Hardwood Floors Versus Engineered Hardwood

While there isn’t any dramatic difference between solid or engineered hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood lends itself to more areas in the home, such as on concrete below grade where solid wood flooring should not be installed. Both options are more environmentally friendly and can be sanded and resurfaced over a lifetime.
